In the 1940s, schools started to put sex education programs into their curriculum, but it wasn't until 1960 that sex education became controversial. Then in 1980 the HIV/AIDS epidemic happened. Sex education became necessary part of school curriculums. But the main question was:
Abstinence-only programs or Abstinence-pro programs?
Abstinence-Only Programs
These programs teach that sex, outside of marriage, is wrong. When you are married is the only time sex is acceptable for two people. In these programs they exaggerate the failures of things like birth control and condoms. They teach the risks and what negative consequence will follow. Risks like STDs. These programs say that having premarital sex will inevitably lead to repercussions you don't want to live with like STD. And if something were to happen to you, like a pregnancy, you must be responsible and have the baby adopted. If you make a mistake you must suffer the consequences. These programs skip over the more controversial topics like masturbation, abortion, and sexual orientation. Many schools that choose abstinence-only programs are private religious schools. Depending on where you live, don't believe in abortion or questioning sexual orientation.
Abstinence-Plus Programs
Unlike abstinence-only programs, abstinence-plus programs teach that sex is natural and that it is nothing to be ashamed of. These programs teach you that if you make the choice to have sex before marriage you have to be responsible and know the outcomes. Abstinence-plus programs teach you how to protect yourself from accidents, like condom use. This gives students the knowledge they need to know before they take the chance. If something does happen, like a pregnancy, it talks about the choices you have. They also teach about the types of STDs and how to prevent and treat them if something were to happen. These programs stress that whatever choice you make you must be smart about your choices and know the weight of the choices.
