Idiocrazy.

Idiocracy. It is the only comedy that will turned into a documentary. This movie is an obvious satire for what could happen to the world. The movie starts with two couples. One is intelligent and rational while the other is impulsive and reactionary. This gets the ball rolling for the increase of the less intelligent population. As the dumber people accidentally reproduce they increase the amount of dumb people, and as the smart people are hesitant to reproduce they reduce the amount of smart people in the world. This movie takes the world to an extreme. Like the movie poster suggests man evolved from apes and now are reverting back to apes.

In Idiocracy the most average man the government can find becomes the smartest man in 500 years. But how? This movie is a satire for the the lack of intelligence humans will have as time progresses. The people in this society are only worried about what is happening on TV, money, and getting laid. Writer Mike Judge predicts that people will only care about what's happening to the stars and what's on TV. And he is right. According to Kid's Health, kids between eight and eighteen spend nearly four hours  day in front of a TV and almost an additional two hours on the computer (outside of homework). This number has been increasing over the past few years. This just shows that people are starting to rely on technology for many things starting at an early age. It's hard for kids to get off their phones in class because they feel like they need it to stay connected to the people around them. But when your friend is sitting right next to you do you really need to text them? With all the new technology that's being invented everyday mailmen and bank tellers are becoming obsolete. Email and ATM machines are taking over the jobs that were once done by humans.

Oppressed women?

Who is Serena Joy? She is the wife of the commander. She strikes the fear of God into Offred's body. She is an oppressed women. In this society there are a lot of women that are wronged. The handmaids are forced to have sex with the commanders, and the wives are forced to watch the ceremony and oblige to their husbands. But what is oppression? It is the prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control. There are a lot of things in this book that are more dystopian, but the oppression of women is not.

In marriages today women are oppressed. In countries like India women are not controlled. In India there are still arranged marriages. Marriage in India is more then two people that love each other finding each other. It is more of a way to attain "social adulthood" as the article says. If a women is lucky she will fall in love with her husband, but it takes time. In many cases it is a patrilocal marriage. This is when a women leaves her family and moves into the home of her husband. This may be where the oppression starts. A woman is living her home and family, where she has gotten nothing but unconditional love, to a new place with people she is unfamiliar with. She is chosen by her qualities, but not qualities we are used to. The families are interested in issues of virginity, chastity, protection of the girls, and other things that are more behavioral or physical in a girl. They care not about how the girl will adjust after she is married. In the 2001 Census in India, the records showed that 1.5 millions girls were married under the age of fifteen. Dystopian books have started to become more predictive. What does this mean about a book like this? Back in the 16th century royals only got married to reproduce for heirs to the throne. Since then the world has tried to change. But will we end up back in the 16th century?

What is a Handmaid?

Webster Dictionary defines it as, "a personal maid or female servant" but The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood defines them as fertile women brought and given to a family for the sole purpose of reproduction. In the society Atwood creates these women are the only hope for society to repopulate. So these girls are trained to lie down and try to pregnant. The book follows Offred. She is the handmaid for Commander Fred and Serena Joy. She is taken away from her husband Luke and her daughter. In the society it is totally normal to be taken away from your family if you are fertile, but to readers this is horrifying. To us this is similar to girls that are trafficked.

Offred and the other handmaids have been sex trafficked. The SEAMEO, or The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization, is an international organization established in 1965 among governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science, and culture in Southeast Asia. Trafficking in common in Asian countries. It is estimated that 1.2 million children are trafficked every year in Cambodia. There are many negative effects on the children that are trafficked. When you take a child and force them into sex trafficking it stops their normal life. They no longer attend school, develop mental problems, their beliefs change, and many other terrible things. They are hurt short term physically and they can be scarred in the long term. More so there is stress on their families to get them back. Many families end up pouring their money into returning their child. They tell the police, hire private investigator, and try to find them themselves. They try to find their kids as soon as possible, but it ends up being a dead end.

Children of Men

Children of Men, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, is a film that illiterates a time where infertility has caused the the world to fall apart. It takes place in the UK or one of the only civilized country left in the world. Throughout the beginning we see lots of people in cages, being dragged around by police, or in transport buses; these people are the refugees that are trying to sneak into the UK. The story follows Theo Faron a former activist that has turned cynical. Theo meets Kee a young and PREGNANT refugee. His ex-wife Julian find him and tries to force him to help her get to the Human Project. Throughout the movie Kee and Theo encounter many obstacles on their way to freedom.

This movie was very symbolic. There were many small details that may have been looked over but are crucial to understand what is happening. During the entire movie we see animals. There are cows or dogs in many of the scenes. At first thought they are nothing. They just animals in the film like they are in any other film. But when thought about at length, why are there so many? Dogs have a shorter life span than humans. Wouldn't the dogs die in the eighteen years that there has been infertility in humans? The dogs show us that humans can't reproduce. Dogs are having puppies and cows are having calves. These animals are not infertile. There is always a human caring for a dog. In the opening scene, when there are people watching the news about the death of Baby Diego, there is a women holding a puppy in her arms. Because humans can't have children of their own their dogs are their children. They are protective and loving in a way they can't be with baby humans.

Along with the symbolism behind some aspects of the movie, the actaullu filming of the movie was amazing. There were scenes when the camera would linger in one point after the main characters would leave. These are interesting moments of the movie. Why would anyone want to watch something of no interest? Maybe because these moments have purpose. In the beginning when Theo is walking from the train, there are many refugees in a cage. He walks out of frame, but the camera is still on the cage of people. During this lull we can see all the different people trying to escape their nation. This shows us that the UK might be the only civilization left in the world that is able to function. Then there are scenes that are shot in one take. This technique is very hard. The set took five hours every time they wanted to reshoot something. In takes like these everything has to be in the right place at the right time and everyone has to be prepared to do exactly what was rehearsed.

Sammi and Her "Loving" Predator

In the book Life As We Knew It, author Susan Beth Pfeffer creates Sammi one of the best friends of Miranda. Sammi is introduced into the story when Miranda says that she has a prom date, and Megan follows with a speech about having sex before marriage. This let readers assume that Sammi is having sex in high school. Later Miranda writes "Sammi had lunch with this week's boyfriend..." Throughout the beginning Miranda sets up that Sammi has gotten around and doesn't care what people think about her. Then the world changes and we lose sight of Sammi and what is happening in her life. Then she comes back in during Summer. She came back to tell Miranda that she was leaving and a forty year old guy named George. At first Miranda was skeptical and with good reason. The idea of her best friend with a forty year old away from her parents and in a strange city is not a concept commonly grasped, but times were different. Sammi's parents gave permission because times are tough in the book. And like Miranda's mom, with one less child there is one less mouth to feed. But it doesn't accuse the fact that a sixteen year old and a forty year old are having a relationship.

The RAINN or Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network work to combat things of that nature. They try to get the information out about victims and predators. 1 out of every 6 women is raped. Though the book doesn't specify what would happen to Sammi in the future there are many stories like hers that don't end well. Girls run away from home with men that say they will protect them. Then they end up being raped or sex trafficked. Every 107 another American is sexually assaulted. It's because men find young girls vulnerable and girls like Sammi that throw themselves into the arms of men don't keep the statistics down.

Truman Show VS 1984

The Truman Show and 1984 have many things in common, but the theme of mistrust is a large part of both stories. In the Truman Show, Truman was surround by actors. None of the people he was around were real. When Winston wanted to go to Fiji the lady at the travel guide store gave him a date to leave, but it was weeks away. She was told to keep him here at all costs so they would keep the show going.  When Winston finally became skeptical of the people. He looked his wedding photo one morning and saw that Meryl had her fingers crossed. He started to realize maybe these people aren't who they say they are and he started acting out. He threatened Meryl because he knew that she was lying to him. What did the Christof do? He sent Marion. And the whole time Christof was whispering in his ear and telling him exactly what to say. The was sent there to defuse the situation. The two people we trusted most in the world did the most lying to him.

 In 1984, the society is constantly paranoid. Many trust the government, but they don't trust each other. Families were not as they are now. They took care of their children but they couldn't trust them. People don't care about their neighbors. If you were doing something against the government they would turn you in in the blink of an eye. You can't trust anyone with any information. Winston's neighbor was terrified of her children because she couldn't trust them. In modern times were are two reasons why teens rebel. In the 1984 society, everybody wants to be with the government. They government provides everything they need. Unless you work in the Ministry of Truth like Winston you have no reason to believe that the way society is now is not that way it has always been. They rebel against their family and friends because they are loyal to the society.
